Why thinking more positively is more critical for your success than you think 5 rules to help you get there

Why thinking more positively is more critical for yur success than you think 5 rules to help you get thereWhy thinking more positively is more critical for your success than you think - 5 rules to help you get thereAbout a year ago, my team and I at Skylum hit a turbulent period. We were doing great as a company, yet we came face to face with some unique and difficult challenges on account of entering a new B2B market, building and testing new products, and revamping our customer service process?- ?all in plus-rechnen to selling our services in more and more countries across the world. We ultimately had to restructure our team and rethink the way we were communicating with customers, marketing partners, and the media. All told, this required a lot of work and a lot of grit, day in and day out. There were long nights and many moments in which it would have been easy to write certain projects off as failures. To give up, in other words.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazin es on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreInstead, we committed to thinking positively, which helped inspire us to continue working harder and more creatively for improvements and solutions. Now, the B2B side of our business is thriving, as are our new processes and systems. And I can see just how much more engaged and motivated my entire team is on a daily basis.Heres the truth nurturing and maintaining a deliberately positive mindset is a crucial component of professional and personalsuccessIt amounts to a strategic commitment to finding and creating positive outcomes. And its in fact more crucial than most of us initially think. But unfortunately, staying positive isnt always easy. Our brains are wired to be cynical and to avoid risks. And negativity?- ?just like positivity?- ?is self-reinforcing. The more we practice thinking negatively and finding the worst in each situation, the more regularly well operate like that. That said, th inking positively is not impossible. And there are certain habits and practices you can adopt and abide by to practice cautious positivity over time?- ?both in your personal life and in your career. Here are a few that have worked best for me.1) Always get a good nightssleepYouve likely heard this before, but it really is absolutely essential. Its a matter of positioning yourself to start each day as prepared as possible for success and positivity. Thinking and operating positively starts with waking up positively. When you dont get a good nights sleep, you inevitably wake up frustrated, agitated, and tired.2) Always start your morning out doing something that energizes youAnd, no, I dont necessarily mean drinking coffee. Do something instead that recharges your mental batteries. Do something fun thats unrelated to work and that gets your mind moving. For some, that might look like writing in a journal, going on a run, or meditating. For me, it looks like drawing, or even working on my massive Lego city complex, which by this point consists of thousands of different bricks. But whatever you do, dont check your emails right away. To truly set yourself up for success, you have to take some time for you?- ?unless of course theres something urgent thats come up.3) Take care of your physicalhealthThis, in turn, will help you take care of your mental health. Personally, the more time I spend either at the gym, or running, or otherwise focusing on my physical health, the better I feel mentally?- ?and the better prepared I am for whatever challenges present themselves during the workday.4) Dont argue withpeopleArguing in general is unproductive. Typically, it serves only to sour your own mood and distract you from focusing on what you otherwise should be focused on finding positive solutions. So make it a rule to never enter into petty arguments with people?- ?ever. This is especially true in the afternoon when your brain naturally becomes more negative. Theres no bett er way to drain your brain of positivity than to waste essential energy arguing.5) Spend your time with positivepeopleOn the flip side, there may be no better way to increase your positivity?- ?to bolster your capacity for positive thinking?- ?than by surrounding yourself with positive people. People who view life and the challenges inherent to it as an opportunity, not a burden. The old adage rings true you really are the product of the people you spend the most time with. So it pays, then, to spend time with positive people. The benefits of all this are numerous and impactful.Personally, Ive seen positivity avail new opportunities and encourage me to take risks I might not otherwise would have. It helped me enter Skylum into new markets and try new, ultimately impactful tools, for example. Now, well all face tough times?- ?times when we think about quitting, or when everything seems to be working against you. But in those moments, maintaining a commitment to positivity is critical, as it encourages us to seek out new opportunities, lessons, and risks?- ?which, at the end of the day, everyone needs to do in order to better their life and continue developing as a person. The hard times, in this sense, act in service of a greater goal and purpose. This article first appeared on Minutes.

The uncomfortable secret to finding your dream job

The uncomfortable secret to finding your dream jobThe uncomfortable secret to finding your dream jobTheres a phenomenon that happens in the beginning of biopics, a moment when, as a child, the soon-to-be famous protagonist hits a ball out of the local ballpark, sings a note she should not be able to sing, or launches an elaborately built rocket using too-sophisticated-for-her-age quantum physics. You see this in real life too, in live interviews and in magazine profiles successful person X explaining that she always knew she would do successful thing Y, that it was what she loved forever, that it shone in her face one day like a magic destiny sunbeam. When success happens like this, its beautiful and life-affirming, which is why we enjoy these stories as much as we do. The idea of a predetermined path gives us a sense of safety and security in a world that often feels random and senseless, a world in which us weirdos often feel lost. But much as meant to be love stories about the one fi ll us with unrealistic expectations about what marriage and finding a partner are supposed to look like, finding your career path doesnt always happen this way, and imagining that it will or should can leave you feeling anxious or paralyzed, wanting to crawl into a ball and hide under the bed. It can make you feel like you shouldnt even try.But I want you to try. I want you to get out from under the bed of fear and start living, so lets cut to the chase its highly unlikely that a career-path lightning bolt will hit you one day and give you road-to-success superpowers.Sometimes your career identity unfolds over years, the path twisting and turning as you learn more about both yourself and the working world. Sometimes, after decades doing something else, your brain cracks open, and you know you do not want to be a dental assistant anymore and instead need to become the worlds greatest cartoonist. And sometimes finding what you should do with your life starts simply with having the cou rage to try something else.None of this will be easy. All of it will require sacrifices that may at first feel unintuitive and even crazy. Especially if where you want to land is far from where you currently are. Especially if you are about to enter the business of reinvention.Ultimately, the process for finding the vocation I wanted and would excel at wasnt soft or calm. It wasnt worksheets or matching my personality type against a series of careers to see what lined up. Those things never turned up writer or editor instead they made me seem like a sociopath. And finding my calling wasnt even about being pragmatic and making lists of what I was good at and what interested me, what sounded compelling or fun.How I found the color of my particular parachute was by force, by taking a hard and honest look at my sadness and insecurity, what made me the most pissed off and envious, the things that I wanted to be so badly that I seethed.Follow your bad feelings and let them lead you to the BIG DREAM of what it is you want to do now. Because behind your anger and jealousy is passion, and even further behind it is fear, and these very strong feelings are what youre going to need to be immer und ewig and unrelenting and succeed at and love what you do.Is there a person in your life who makes you secretly feel TREMENDOUSLY jealous? Is there a job that makes you ANGRY?Now listen with more intention, because probably what youre actually hearing is I wish that were me. And instead of wasting all this time being jealous, sad, or pissed, you should channel that energy into transforming your life.Roll around in the world, examine what you like and what you dont, study what comes naturally to you and what doesnt. Follow your bad feelings to their origin. Lift up the rock of your envy of that girl who makes textiles/writes graphic novels/builds buildings/takes pictures. Expose yourself. Get to a place where you are vulnerable and open.In this journey of exploration, there may co me a moment when what you want to do will slap you in the face, when doing this thing and imagining yourself doing this thing will feel so special as to almost be illicit, and when thinking about getting paid just for doing this thing will nearly kill you with happiness. When someone else is doing what you want to do, you will blaze with jealousy. It will burn and burn and burn inside you.Actually doing what you want to do will make you feel so afraid your body will shake, and you will want to throw up. Whether your career dream is special or broad, creative or medical or political or technical, gaining access to this dream will feel exhilarating. This is how you know youve found it.This article is adapted from Weird In A World Thats Not A Career Guide For Misfits, F*ckups, And Failuresby Jennifer Romolini. So, what does all of this preparation entail? Well, its different for every model. Models will experiment with what makes them look and feel their best, and theyll often share their tried and true methods with everyone whos wondering, just how do they do it? Get Lots of Sleep We all know that a lack of sleep is tough on the body, and before long, it takes a great toll on your health and your appearance. You can usually tell by looking at someone if theyre sleep deprived, so its important that runwaymodels are very well-rested before a runway show so they look their best. Not only is it important to get a lot of sleep before models take to the catwalk, but its also critical t o be well-rested before photo shoots or any other kind of modeling job. Maintain a Healthy Diet Before a runway show, models try to make sure they arent bloated and are feeling energetic and healthy. A well-rounded diet is a must for models, and they often kick up their healthy eating leading up to a fashion show. Although many models admit they stick to a healthy diet most of the time,Victorias Secret Angel Lily Aldridge shared that she eats a lot of salmon and vegetables before a show to look and feel her best. On the other hand, Angel Candace Swanepoeladmits she eats a lot of steak and mashed potatoes before a show to keep her weight where she wants it and not be too small. Hell do up to 600 sit-ups and 1000 push-ups a day before a show, along with a lot of cardio. While supermo dels are admired for their perfect form, they certainly work hard to achieve and maintain them After all, a big parte of their job is looking good Stay Hydrated Part of a healthy diet includes staying hydrated. Not only will increasing your fluid intake make your skin look better, but drinking water will also speed up metabolism. Professional models know that being super hydrated before they walk the runway is critical in preventing dizziness and even fainting caused by dehydration, which can be disastrous. Reduce Your Stress Being a runway model takes more than just looking beautiful for a few minutes on the runway. You will experience multiple fittings, rehearsals, hair, and makeup sessions, and more- all of which means you will be pushed and pulled in a multitude of directions. Having patience, and finding your own happy place inside your head, while the fashion show chaos swirls around you, is essential not only for a healthy body but also a healthy state of mind.

Ive done a substantial amount of research and cannot find any good rules of thumb for determining the value of a company car benefit. How likely am I to get them to simply cover the cost of my monthly car payment on the replacement vehicle? Any ideas on the value of such a benefit?AYou may not be able to receive the monetary value of your car if the car was a benefit that was not required for you to perform the primary responsibilities of your job. In other words, if youre a sales representative and you need a car to meet and sell your company products then you may be in a much better position to demand for the value of the car. However, there is no rule of thumb when it comes to the value of a car. Plant Life to Essential Skills for Plant Engineers

Plant Life to Essential Skills for Plant Engineers Plant Life to Essential Skills for Plant Engineers Being a plant engineer can require people skills, problem solving, and the willingness to sometimes get over theless glamorous aspects of engineering. For Mike Cramer, lead plant engineer at FuelCell Energy, Danbury, CT, it comes down to efficiency. Working much more on the operations side, he focuses heavily on final assembly and conditioning. He finds an apt comparison is looking at fuel cells like batteries. If short one battery, the whole series of batteries wont work, he says.My role is first maintaining production and keeping it to the schedule. First, quality and above that, safety, he says. The main goal is to come up with ways to make production easier so that it can aid safety ergonomics, cost reduction, and cycle time.Problem solving is one of many skills that make a good plant engineer. Image FuelCell EnergyAnd the problem solving? Try having to move 110,000 pounds. In th is case, it comes down to utilizing air pallets, a type of load-moving equipmentthat usescompressed air in bestellung to make it possible. Only needing four people for the move is the target here. This, he reminds, also has a clear effect on cost reduction. It could be in saving the time of everyone leaving their job for five to ten minutes for movement, he says. They also have to drive the air pallet onto the stacking fixture. Its about five feet square, thousands of pounds and needs to be placed within 15,000th of an inch. It could take 20 minutes or even four hours when you consider the tiny room for error in backing up the trailer.Analytical AbilityThe challenge, regardless of the goal, is to live up to their joke of how the workers want the task to seemnice and boring. And often they achieve this, allowing the team to focus on supplier questions or track quality issues. Its about understanding better what to spend time on and what is waste. While Cramer finds the analytical abili ty comes naturally to some, for others, I see engineers believing they find a problem and they will come up with a solution right away without understanding the root cause. In other words, he says good luck with that. When he started, it was one stack accomplished a year. Cramer believes his patience has helped him be a part of what is now 200, annually. But there are other improvements to come as he thinks LEED manufacturing programs will grow, lowering cycle time for materials entering and leaving the plant as finished goods, along with finding the balance between high quality and efficiency.Path to PlantThe best path to plant engineer? Have strong experience with how machines work and how to design them to get a nice mix of the theoretical and the practical, he says. Students should also look for projects in school where they have to learn how to work with different people in cross functional teamsand not just engineers. since it wont be that way once they enter the profession, he says.Beyond technical skill, have a willingness to find out how the geschftsleben runs, dont just have tunnel vision towards your job.And maybe, just maybe, be prepared to move some massive weight.Eric Butterman is an independent writer. Have strong experience with how machines work and how to design them to get a nice mix of the theoretical and the practical.Mike Cramer, FuelCell Energy

6 keys to declutter your messy resume right now

6 keys to declutter your messy resume right now6 keys to declutter your messy resume right nowCommon wisdom tells us to limit all the important information on our resume to a single page while highlighting job experience and random factoids. But what about that series of McJobs, or the unfortunate gig that ended really (really) badly? Is it considered smart to leave those out of an updated CV, or will it seem like youre lying?Heather Monahan, a womens empowerment and business expert, mentor, and speaker told Ladders, A resume should be professional and include specifics that highlight your successes throughout your career, and should always be an honest representation of your work history.1. Who are you? While some jobs offer title changes without raises, others tend to hold onto titles that seem a bit dusty in light of the new generation of jobs. If youre changing jobs after a long time at the same company, do some research to see if your title is still interesting or even relevant. Even if you were referred to by one title at your office, its possible that no one uses that particular moniker elsewhere anymore.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more2. To hobby or not hobby? As to the eternal question of whether to include hobbies, Monahan believes that it depends. Unless your hobbies are somehow highlighting your talents and value that you are bringing to your future employer, it seems unnecessary, she said. So, definitely no need to mention your Rugby prowess or mad origami skills. And in case youre wondering, some hobbies are more interesting to recruiters than others. For instance, Monahan said, If you have a hobby that contributes to your success in the workplace than it would be appealing. For example, if CrossFit is your hobby and you are a running coach, it would lend value to your career.3. Mind the gapEven when tidying up your work history, the jury is out on leaving huge blank spaces in your resume. While Monahan said, You want an honest representation of your work history. It is important to include where you have worked and not leave gaps on your resume, its also important to realize that not every job best represents the professional you are now.For instance, if you had a meltdown and your last job and no one there has a good thing to say about you or your performance, it might be best to leave it off your resume or instead highlight the way that ort helped your skills - without mentioning names or job specifics.4. Ghosts of jobs pastSo, you decide to leave out a past position that seems to have nothing to do with the one youre applying for when suddenly, the interviewer mentions something you have experience doing. Now what? Is it okay to bring up a past job that you havent mentioned in your pared-down resume? What if the interviewer asks about it? Monahan says, If you havent included a job on your resume, why would you bring it up? This would be a red flag in an interview.A bigger red flag though would probably be trying to play down a situation in which the interviewer knows about your past job or specifically asks why you havent mentioned it. In that case, dont lie or try to play it cool. Explain that you were paring down your resume and didnt think that experience best highlighted your current skill set.If painted into a corner, try being open and the slightest bit vulnerable. Let the interviewer know that you had a rough time at that gig, and preferred to leave it in the past since youve moved on and hope your current skills, recommendations and experience speak for themselves. And then smile and wait for the next question.5. References unavailableIts entirely possible that every single time youve searched for a job in the past youve relied on the same few tried and true colleagues, or past supervisors for letters, or recommendation, or references. If youre hoping to enter a different career arena or simply evolve professionally, you might want to update which parts of your career you highlight and which you minimize. Along with that goes past references. Did your last boss rave about you or simply offer a nod and grunt when asked about your past performance? Take stock of not only your past performance but also your current connections when choosing which past supervisors to share as potenzial references.6. Dont save the best for lastAll of us have at least one great story that garners laughs or oohs and ahs. And while its a good idea to share these at parties, it might not be the best option when job hunting. If youre wondering if its wise to save an interesting bit of career history for the follow-up email after your interview, it isnt. Monahan says, You get one shot to make a first impression and you want to lead with your best foot forward. I would not hold back on any highlights when trying to secure an initial interview. What you can do though, is offer a teaser that will hopefully pique the interest of potential interviewers. Its fine to offer a hint about those fun days, back when you were a deckhand for Richard Branson, but save the best parts of the story for the interview if possible (and if asked about it). This article was first published on November 9, 2017.You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people
